First off, we at Highlights Early Learning deeply appreciate and respect all educators. Thank you and your colleagues for all you do to help the world’s most important people: children. What makes you most excited to go to work every day?

I have had the honor of serving in various capacities, including teacher, administrator, director, and faculty member throughout my career. Now, as a consultant, I have the privilege of using all that I have learned to help educators, families, and members of the community grow through professional development, coaching, and strategic support. It's a full-circle moment for me and I love what I do.

What is something you’ve observed that teachers are enjoying most about Hello Library?

Our students, including those with special needs, deserve exposure and access to high-quality print materials in the classroom. This can be particularly challenging with a paper or cardboard book for multiple reasons, including frequent handling, sensory and motor challenges, oral and tactile exploration, and behavioral challenges. Teachers love Hello Library because the texts are durable and easy to clean. They can even be washed, which is a remarkable bonus.

What is something you’ve observed students are enjoying most about Hello Library?

Students enjoy the independence the books provide. Because of how the books are made, students can explore in whatever manner works best for them. There is no fear of ripping or tearing the books, allowing the students to explore reading without constant oversight. They especially love when a trusted adult joins them for the find-it pages.

What is something you, as an education consultant, appreciate about Hello Library?

When making a purchase for your program, every dollar matters. Directors and administrators have to be discerning with funds and ask themselves about the return on investment. Hello Library was, and is, an easy choice for me. Our students have a right to a solid literacy foundation and exposure to multiple types of texts. They deserve to feel what it is like to hold a book and turn the pages. They should be given as many opportunities to explore pictures, written words, and new vocabulary throughout their day as possible. Hello Library provides that opportunity for students, no matter where they are on their developmental journey.

Are the teachers you work with using Hello Library as is, putting their own spin on it, or something in between, and why?

I have witnessed teachers using the Hello Library in many ways. I love seeing them used at circle time or in a quiet one-on-one moment with a child. My favorite is when teachers add them to the dramatic play area to make connections between what students are playing and the written words that represent it. I have seen them set up in specific areas of the room where the story matches the object, for example, the text on pets is with a pet-themed puzzle, or the book with coats, hats, and scarves is in the coat hook area. I'm always excited when I see them outside of the classroom for parents to look at and use when picking up their children.
